Govt yet to identify operators of nuke plants

Indonesia’s plan to set up nuclear power plants remains unclear as the government has not identified owners who would responsible to operate the plants.

The National Nuclear Energy Agency (Batan), a focal point for preparing power plants in Indonesia, admitted the absence of definitive decision on operators had hampered discussions on the planned nuke plants.

“No decision has been made on what organization will be responsible for owing and operating nuclear power plants,” Batan chairman, Hadi Hastowo told a seminar on “prospect of nuclear electric power in Indonesia” on Thursday.

“It will be difficult to discuss further on the nuclear plant of no definitive decision on owner or operators of the plants.”

The government has named Batan to charge the development work and preparation for nuclear energy, while Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapiten) would be regulatory body for nuke plants.

Hadi admitted a number of private companies had expressed their interest in developing nuclear plants in Indonesia.

The government has set three phases in preparing the nuke plants. So far, the government has only finished the first phase to assess infrastructures, including policies, needed for the projects.

“We could not move into the second phase to invite bid unless there is a policy decision on operators of the plants,” he said.
